FIREFLY

by Jack Crompton (1996)

In the stillness of my sojourn’s night

there appears to me a magical light

Catching my eye—enchanting my heart

illuminating my mind as it pierces the dark

Yet as I try to focus my sight

she turns off her radiant light

And weaves through space beyond my view

to reappear at a point that’s new

She spins my head as her beacon shines

off and on — at irregular times

Her brilliance is without question still

but the promise in her beauty — unfulfilled

Oh how I long to hold, to touch

this delicate creature I love so much

Within her spark there burns a flame

for which my heart yearns with pain

And so alone again I sleep

my head is dizzy—my feelings deep

And dream I will of love that lasts

beyond the shadow of darkness cast.
