SWING OUT SISTER
The Ultimate Collection

as reviewed by Jack Crompton at Amazon.com, April 30, 2008

Good Energy... my favorite traveling music.

The Ultimate Collection it is. Swing Out Sister (SOS) is the stage name for the creative musical duo Corinne Drewery and Andy Connell – a fabulously gifted singer/multi-instrumentalist musician combo that is responsible for nearly twenty years of great, sophisticated, ‘late-night jazz fusion’ vocal music.

Since first hearing them back in ’89, SOS has only grown in my affections. The tracks on all album releases, in which this disc contains the brightest, are all impeccably recorded and mastered. The arrangements are interesting and engaging and the music itself is up-beat, positive, optimistic and just feel-good all the way around.

SOS is one of my favorite soundtracks for driving down the highway. This music never fails to put me in a good mood, even when Corinne is singing about heartache, and yes, there’s a few of those, but for the most part, this is joyful, uplifting, uptempo music that will engage you. There’s some exquisite covers recorded here too that come off beautifully, such as ‘Stoned Soul Picnic’ and ‘La La Means I Love You’. I just love this stuff.

If you are new to SOS, this 3-disc compilation is sure to blow you away, and if you are already a fan and already own their CD’s,  it would still be worth your while to own this one as all the tracks have been enhanced and remastered and the sound quality and signal/noise ratio, etc. will just astound you. The Ultimate Collection is a beautiful recording by one of the best contemporary jazz/pop artists today.
