Striking in it’s originality...
This unique film defies any classification or description. The film is a dream. It’s not about a dream, but is a dream. And it is told to the viewer exactly as a dream, with all the mixed-up metaphors and archetypes that one experiences in the dream state.
Waking Life is rendered with a combination of strikingly beautiful artwork/photo moving photo images, which accentuates and enhances the dreamlike subject of the film. The effect is that it appears supernormal... almost a psychedelic experience as one notices the subtle play of color, texture and light in ordinary objects and people.
Equally engaging as the visuals, however, is the dialogue. It runs from one subject to another, one thought form to another in the same way that a dream state does, abruptly leaving one to go on to another totally unrelated scene, yet all are woven together by an unseen intelligence somehow communicating to the subconscious.
This film goes deep into the infinite realm of the human mind. I’ve not seen anything like this film, either before or since. It’s an incredible film experience and alters one’s consciousness.
A word of advice when you see this: Make sure you’re in the mood for something different and and don’t think too much when viewing this extraordinary movie. Just let go and go with the flow as you experience it for what it is. Enough said.
