Let’s see... I”m all tied up...
A masterpiece of ironic comedy, 'What About Bob' is the role that Bill Murray was born to play. This superbly written (and acted) screenplay is full of laughs from beginning to end. I would have to say it's probably the funniest movie I own. I've seen it many times. So much, I can recite much of the dialog from memory.
I'm not sure that anyone else could have played the character of Bob besides Bill Murray. Indeed, the whole movie seems to have been written to his rather quirky, comical persona. Bill Murray seems to just play himself, seemingly improvising every line. Dreyfuss is also superb as the unfortunate Psychiatrist who inherited Bob's case who during the course of the film ironically ends up a mental case himself.
The role reversals of the these two characters is the core of what makes this story work. However, it is definitely the character of Bob that makes it a supreme comedy. The facial expressions, the pet goldfish ('Gill') Bob carries around his neck, and his multitude of bizarre neurosises, combined with his basic lovability, all make him a wonderful character.
Definately worth watching. Be prepared to laugh till it hurts!
